A cylindrical version of a frost-proof cistern.

Pull and release – but still freezing cold

Toilet in the backyard

Next to the Plumbing Workshop is a row of courtyard toilets. Here, the old bucket privies have been replaced by pull-and-release flushing toilets, just as happened in many backyards during the twentieth century.

A frost-proof toilet

An outdoor flushing toilet has one disadvantage compared with a bucket privy: the water can freeze. To prevent this, frost-proof installations were widely used. A frost-proof cistern remains empty until the pull cord is operated. The toilet bowl’s water trap is located about one metre below ground level, where the temperature is usually above freezing.

The Rear Buildings from Horsens

Most of the courtyard toilets are still in working order. Someone might even be using one right now!
