The room is no bigger than a broom cupboard, yet there is still enough space for a high-level cistern toilet.
An Extra Courtyard Toilet
Although the room is no bigger than a broom cupboard, there is still space for a high-level cistern toilet.
Just inside the entrance to the Moped Workshop is the house’s small courtyard toilet. It was installed in 1932, when the residents’ flats were fitted with indoor toilets. The courtyard toilet served as a spare facility for the residents, but could also be used by tradespeople and others with business in the courtyard.

The Moped Workshop is located in the basement of the Copenhagen Corner’s back courtyard.
A Seasonal Toilet
Despite the risk of frost damage, not all courtyard toilets were built with frost-proof fittings. This toilet has both a conventional flushing cistern and a toilet pan with an integral water trap. During severe winters, both could freeze. As a result, courtyard toilets like this were often closed during the winter months.

During the winter months, anyone caught short had to find somewhere else to go when the courtyard toilet was closed because of frost.
