Courses for healthcare professionals and students

Hear about Den Gamle By’s work with the reminscence programs. Find inspiration and guidance for working actively with memories and communicating with elderly people affected by dementia. The participants will be shown the specific method used in The House of Memory.

The visit includes an introduction to communication techniques, dementia, reminiscence and a presentation of the theory behind Den Gamle By’s reminscence programs.

We visit The House of Memory and Den Gamle By’s 1970s neighbourhood, where participants are given a guided tour of the flats and learn about housing and living conditions in the 1950s and ’70s.

“Thank you for everything you laid on yesterday. I’d like to pass on greetings from our assistants, who greatly appreciated being shown around the flat as well as your presentation about the value of reminiscing. Our students learned a lot, and it gave them the courage to try reminiscence in connection with their future practice. In fact, in the next few days they will be working with reminiscence for individual citizens or groups. It was very good that, during the presentation, you provided examples of reminiscence, and that you used evidence-based knowledge and other research results to support reminiscence. You clearly knew what you were talking about, not just in relation to dementia, but also about people in general, which of course is all-important, as it’s vital that you see the person rather than the disease. It was wonderful to be looked after by a museum assistant who was able to pass on their experience in a positive and useful way. We will definitely be back.”
