Helsingør Theater
The theatre from Helsingør (Elsinore) from 1817 has an atmosphere
of its own. Originally it was situated on the corner of Bjergegade
and Groskenstræde in Helsingør. It was built and run by the local
dramatic society and functioned as the town's theatre and ballroom.
The theatre is unique in its being financed by the citizens of the
town in contrast to the royal and noble theatres of the 17th and
18th centuries. The theatre is thus a clear picture of the middle
class' public life in this period, when the wealthy middle classes
became patrons of the arts. As the theatre looks today it is the
oldest stage in its original form in Denmark.
From Helsingør to Aarhus
In its last years in Helsingør, the theatre also functioned as
the town's cinema. As time went by and a more modern room was needed
for the film shows, the theatre was to be demolished. Luckily, the
buildings were offered to The Old Town and here the building was
opened in 1961.
Music and meetings
Helsingør Theatre is still used in keeping with its original purpose.
The theatre can hold 237 people and is, among other things, the frame
for classical concerts by professional musicians, among these the
chamber music concerts by The Aarhus Symphony Orchestra. Every
summer from August to September The Aarhus Summer Opera performs
one or two operas.
A number of companies wanting an extraordinary room with a special
atmosphere have chosen to have conferences and meetings in Helsingør Theatre.
