A walk on stilts

Boiling of sweets

For Children

Children and the young at heart always have something to do in The Old Town. Look at the patterns in the half-timbering on the houses and the carved beam ends sticking out over the streets. Walk into the shops and breathe in the atmosphere.
You can look into the latrines and be amazed at the way people went to the bathroom only 100 years ago. You can walk out onto the open squares and imagine how the boys sailed their ships in the gutters. While walking you will meet the geese, of the Danish farm race, which are an entertaining addition in the streets and alleys of the town.
Remember to visit the large toy museum in the house from Næstved in Søndergade.

Holiday specials
During the school holidays children can have a go at working with seasonal subjects. Boiling of sweets from a famous recipe is always on the program. Otherwise the subjects differ. The Old Town has offered workshops in turnip lanterns and kite making in the autumn, verse letters and candle making in the winter and toy making during the summer holiday.

The school and the Merchant's House
In the school from Kerteminde the sand table tells us about saving paper before the children had learned to write properly. The shelf for the wooden shoes shows conditions entirely different from the school bus and plastic lunch boxes of today.
In the Merchant's House children can see how the first children's rooms show up in the house of the wealthy merchant around 1864. Close to the kitchen, naturally, so the children could learn to eat properly before being allowed to join their parents at their table. In the glazier's workshop, the bed of the apprentice under the worktable shows the conditions of the craftman's children.

Family Quiz
At the ticket office, families with children can get a historic quiz game. It is a story of two children from the 1800s. By following the footsteps of the two children in the story you are guided around in the museum and must answer questions about things that are different from children’s life nowadays. The quiz is available in Danish, English and German. Every month a winner is drawn and will have a prize sent.
